As an athletic trainer, movement educator, speaker, and health activist, Jay Colwell is molding a new narrative of physical health within the classical vocal industry. During his time as an athletic trainer and bodywork practitioner, he has coached world-class artists on the rosters of The Metropolitan Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, The Chicago Lyric Opera, LA Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, and others. Along with many hours of training and coaching professional vocalists, his technique and approach are an integration and assimilation of hundreds of hours of continuing education and personal study, blending approaches from many influences including corrective exercise, yoga, FRC, FMS, and somatic movement practices, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance.
Jay’s method of coaching is grounded in the belief that the entire body is the vocal instrument and the body’s innate ability to heal itself and build back stronger. His precise, somatic, and alignment-based style enables his students to listen intuitively and make self-correcting adjustments so that the body is more naturally able to inherit a greater sense of strength, physical spaciousness, and expansive breathing.
In addition to the Singing Body Clinic, Jay currently serves as the director of his private health coaching company, Colwellness, and is the Chief of Physician Wellness for Coast Radiology Imaging & Intervention, Inc. In his personal endeavours, he is an avid yogi, runner and marathoner and has received multiple awards, including second place in his respective age group for his most recent full marathon. Currently Jay resides in Southern Orange County, CA.
